Oaxaca
Oaxaca
Oaxaca is an enormous state located in southern Mexico, with Oaxaca City at its center as the capital. Ancient and remote, it is a land of complex traditions and unmapped histories. Home to more than 16 distinct Indigenous groups, Oaxaca is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas in the country. These cultures are not relics of the past—they're alive and thriving. From the weaving communities of Teotitlán del Valle and Alebrije wood carvers in San Martín Tilcajete to the black clay potters of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca is a feast for the eyes and a gastronomic treasure. Famous for its seven moles—including the iconic mole negro—alongside dishes like tlayudas, memelas, chapulines (grasshoppers), and the beloved, stringy quesillo cheese, it’s also the home of smoky, delicious mezcal.
OJO - The people of Oaxaca are deeply proud of their heritage. In the last decade, tourism has grown immensely, which has naturally brought some gentrification to the city. This shift has led to feelings of frustration among some locals. As a visitor, please be mindful and respectful during your time there.
